Closed off

Vic Smith (Oct 26) wants to know why the South Island cannot be closed off from the rest of New Zealand.

Could I suggest that he spends a day and night at SH1 Amberley and counts the number of trucks and vans heading both ways that are loaded with goods and services heading to and from the ferries.

So your answer, Vic, is in one word. Economics!
