Man denies rule breach

A man who was arrested in the South Island almost a month after allegedly breaking Auckland’s Covid lockdown rules has denied several charges.
Laurie Jeffery Midwood, 41, who was arrested in Wa¯naka, appeared in the Queenstown District Court via audiovisual link, yesterday.
He denied a charge of leaving Auckland, a Covid-19 alert level 3 restricted area, on September 28.
He pleaded guilty to charges of stealing a car registration from Tokoroa and a registration plate from Paeka¯ ka¯ riki on October 18, and driving while forbidden at Wa¯ naka on October 21.
Defence counsel Tanya Surrey said he also faced charges in the Thames District Court, which he denied.
Judge Catriona Doyle remanded Midwood in custody for a sentencing indication on January 10.
