Trio deny charges after 4-year-old injured

Three people have denied any wrongdoing in relation to a 4-year-old child who suffered severe injuries, including fractures to his hips, ribs and spine. The two women and man, who cannot be named due to suppression orders, pleaded not guilty to all charges during their appearances in the Christchurch District Court yesterday. One of the accused, a 38-year-old woman, has been charged with wounding the boy with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, wounding with intent to injure, reckless disregard for safety, and neglecting the child. A 21-year-old woman has been charged that between September 18 and October 7 she ‘‘omitted to perform a legal duty to provide care, medical attention and prevent injuries’’ to the boy. The charge says the omission of these duties, expected of a reasonable person, were likely to cause suffering, severe malnourishment, psychological trauma, and physical injuries to the child. A 41-year-old man is facing two charges of assaulting the same child in September and October, but these alleged assaults do not relate to the injuries listed in the neglect charges. The defendants have all been remanded on bail to be back in court on March 7.
