Two new cases in Nelson region

The two new cases have been epidemiologically linked to this month’s Omicron cluster, the Ministry of Health said.

This follows three cases in Nelson-tasman announced on Wednesday by the Ministry of Health, one of which was linked to the Motueka Omicron cluster, which was first announced on Friday when nine members of a family group who had travelled to Auckland for a wedding tested positive.

The other two cases from

Wednesday were being treated as suspected Omicron.

Health authorities were investigating them to understand any possible links to other cases or to Covid-19 exposure events.

So far, the cases are in three households.

All members of the households are isolating at home.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed the original cases in Motueka were the highly contagious Omicron variant, which, along with cases in Auckland, prompted a decision to move the entire country into the red setting of the Covid-19 protection framework.

Nelson Marlborough Health is urging anyone with Covid-19 symptoms, no matter how mild, to get tested, even if they are vaccinated.

On Wednesday 403 Covid-19 tests were done across Nelson and Marlborough, and 2423 vaccinations across the two regions, including 1909 boosters and 378 paediatric doses.
