How will Kyle Jamieson fare when he has to bowl in less favourable conditions than those in New Zealand and England, where he started his test career?

The Black Caps seamer has only had one day of international bowling in India, on day one of the first test in Kanpur, but so far the answer seems to be clear: Just as well as he has so far.

He took three of the four wickets to fall after India’s stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and chose to bat in the rematch of the World Test Championship final, which New Zealand won by eight wickets in England in June.

But he will need to deliver again on the second day if the Black Caps are to have any chance of pulling themselves back into the contest, with India 258-4 at stumps on day one and support for his sterling efforts in short supply.

Jamieson took 3-47 and Tim

Southee, the only other seamer in their XI, took 1-43, while battling through a groin injury, but the hosts dealt with the spin trio of Ajaz Patel, Will Somerville and debutant Rachin Ravindra with comfort.

Shreyas Iyer was not out on 75, in sight of a test century on debut, while Ravindra Jadeja was unbeaten on 50, and their partnership for the fifth wicket stood at an imposing 113.

Jamieson got Shubman Gill’s inside edge to bowl him for 52 then got Rahane to chop on for 35, after starting by removing Mayank

Agarwal, caught behind for 13.

His wickets were his 47th, 48th, and 49th for New Zealand, leaving him one shy of the 50 mark, and as long as he gets there in this test, or his next two, he will be the fastest Kiwi to reach the milestone, surpassing Shane Bond’s record of 12 matches.
