What’s new to listen to

A roundup of what we’re tuning into in the world of podcasts and music.

An Evening with Silk Sonic

This is a tonic for toxic times. A throwback for the future, made by two of the finest – a bona fide superstar (Bruno Mars) and an underground unicorn (Anderson .Paak). You know their names, you just didn’t know they’re a thing now. The pair liked each other, bonded between shows, messed about with a few riffs and joked about starting a band, but no-one seriously thought their schedules would allow it. When lockdown confronted both artists with an inability to perform concerts, they took the opportunity, found a rhythm, caught a vibe and this is the result. An irresistibly cool night out, it plays like one single set. After dinner entertainment designed for wide collars and plunging necklines. A bold, brash splash of colour. – Alex Behan

Stacey Dooley: Fresh Starts

Stacey Dooley is one of the United Kingdom’s best TV presenters and journalists, exploring complex issues with empathy and sensitivity. This podcast focuses on people who, at some point in their lives, decided to throw everything out the window and start again. The first episode of the new season features an interview with Dooley’s own partner Kevin Clifton, a Strictly Come Dancing star who found himself without work during the pandemic and took on a surprising new hobby. The second features a heart-warming story about a woman named Sam, who, after decades of failed relationships with men, came out at 45 and found a new lease on life. Dooley is a caring interviewer, and the show is equal parts hilarious and tear-jerking.

Enjoy The Ride Pt 1

Aucklander Rei is classic singer/rapper/dancer triple-threat and his latest album has summer on its mind. Upbeat by nature and boasting an increasingly cutting wit, he rhymes kaupapa with dole bludger in a bilingual/bicultural punchline on Action. He makes a political swipe at the whiteRight on Die Happy, when he tells Judith ‘‘we’re gonna de-Collin-ise the name’’. That’s two ticks from me. Although it’s true of many artists, if Rei was anywhere else in the world, he would enjoy a substantially larger following. He sits uneasily among our (glacially changing) tall-poppy attitudes, shamelessly flaunting his multiple assets song after song. – Alex Behan

Aotearoa Hip Hop: The Music, the People, the History

At two seasons and 11 episodes long, this proclaims to be the most in-depth music podcast ever produced in New Zealand, and I’m inclined to say they’re right. Host Phil Bell (aka DJ Sir-Vere) has conducted more than 100 interviews for the show, inviting friends and colleagues from throughout his career to shine a light on how Aotearoa’s unique hip-hop sound developed and flourished. The first, six-episode season covers 1980-1996, starting with the unknown story of DJ Tony ‘‘Teepee’’ Pene, and wrapping up with the launch of Che Fu’s solo career. Extra commentary comes from David Dallas, Dawn Raid, Deceptikonz, Dei Hamo, Ladi6, K’Lee, P-Money, Savage – and more. It’s a compelling, vibrant and urgent listen.
