What to watch this week

– James Croot

Our Ladies (November 24, Neon Rentals)

Based on Alan Warner’s award-winning 1998 novel The Sopranos, writer-director Michael CatonJones’ latest project is a coming-of-age dramedy about a group of Catholic schoolgirls who get an opportunity to go into Edinburgh for a choir competition, but are more interested in drinking, partying and hooking up than achieving singing success. ‘‘What Derry Girls and Our Ladies share is a big, beating generous heart and a genuine affection, make that love, for young women at the point in their lives when they are at their most brave,’’ wrote The Scottish Herald’s Alison Rowat.

The Beatles: Get Back (November 25, Disney+)

Originally envisioned as a one-off documentary, Sir Peter Jackson’s reputation for extended running times has resulted in this becoming a three-part endeavour debuting on consecutive nights. It aims to take audiences back in time to the Fab Four’s January 1969 recording sessions, known now as a pivotal point in music history. This lovingly restored archival footage shows them attempting to write 14 new songs in preparation for their first live show in more than two years.

Burning (November 26, Amazon Prime Video)

The film Scott Morrison won’t want you to see. Having tackled successive Australian governments’ attitudes towards immigration in Chasing Asylum, documentarian Eve Orner here takes a look at ‘‘the lucky country’s’’ increasing problems with bushfires and politicians’ continued denial that it has anything to do with climate change. Features plenty of shocking footage of the Black Summer of 2019-20.
