Q&A
Marcus Keenan General manager of Rydges Formosa Golf Resort
What is one place you would take every visitor to New Zealand, and why?
That would have to be Doubtful Sound/Patea. It is such a serene, quiet, untouched part of the country, with mindblowing scenery where you can easily imagine what the country used to be like. A bonus is the trip across Lake Manapo uri and a visit to the hydro power station. But remember, it’s Fiordland, so don’t forget your raincoat and insect repellent.
What is your secret backyard favourite spot?
Not sure it’s a secret, but it is O¯ mana Regional Park. It has outstanding views across Hauraki Gulf, bush walks, farm walks, and bike and running trails, all within such a short distance of Auckland.
What is your favourite place for a pie/coffee?
Fergbaker, in Queenstown. That’s right, not Fergburger, but Fergbaker next door. The bakery has incredible pies and sweet treats. For coffee, I’m a creature of habit and grab my early pick-me-up from Nineteen Restaurant at Rydges Formosa Golf Resort before starting my day.
What is one New Zealand spot that’s at the top of your bucket list?
A true West Coast road trip. Sadly, I have only visited Greymouth, but would love to do the entire coast, top to bottom, to experience the legendary West Coast hospitality. I am not sure if I am game enough to go full West Coast though, and take on the wild food.
