The indifferent rich
Having been immersed in many and varied facets of the volunteer sector over more than 50 years locally, nationally and internationally, I can attest to the import of Alison Mau’s opinion piece ‘‘The rich are indifferent when it comes to backing a cause’’ (November 21).
During this work, alongside many hundreds of volunteers and their organisations in authentic situations seeking funds, it was invariably those with lesser financial ability who gave support. Some being generous to a fault in giving of their time, talent, abilities, skills, knowledge and money, just as we have and are still witnessing now (in Covid) in many communities.
Sadly, too often requests to those seemingly better off often were ignored. Not even the courtesy of a reply.
Being generous demonstrates a readiness to give something of value, not only money.
