Staff and students killed by car bomb near school gate

Pupils and teachers were among at least eight people killed in a rush-hour suicide car bombing near a school in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. The extremist group al Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaeda, admitted the bombing, claiming it had targeted a United Nations convoy escorting ‘‘white officers’’ from a training base. Witnesses said vehicles carrying troops from the African Union (AU) regional forces, who have been fighting the militants, were in the vicinity of the blast at 7.30am, and heard gunfire. ‘‘I was close to the area when the blast occurred, there was an AU convoy . . passing by,’’ Said Ibrahim said. There has been no confirmation of military deaths or injuries.
