Return of the advent calendar

The popular Wellington Advent Calendar goes live today with a new dining, event, shopping and experience deal every day in December until Christmas.

It is the 12th iteration of the calendar, which is an annual promotion by economic development agency WellingtonNZ.

Last year the advent calendar resulted in more than $205,000 in voucher redemptions for the businesses involved.

Offer details are a closely guarded secret but will involve a mix of old and new businesses, including Wellington Zoo, Puffin, Good Books and Little Dough Co, WellingtonNZ general manager Anna Calver said.

‘‘The purpose of the calendar is to support businesses during the quieter Christmas holiday period. With advent vouchers remaining valid until the end of January, it means you can essentially bank some amazing deals for you, your friends and whānau.’’

Each advent door from December 1 to 25, updated daily online, will feature original illustrations from local artist Mary Guo. She said she drew on her love of manga comics and Japan-based Studio Ghibli to design the calendar’s scenes.

‘‘I particularly enjoyed placing cute animals in the scenes, to let them wander around and have fun in the shops and different locations around Wellington.’’

People who click on the 25th door will be able to enter the draw to win the ultimate calendar experience.
