Youth driving

If court cases involving deadly driving by a youth must be prosecuted in the Youth Court (Widow of triathlete killed while cycling wants tougher penalties for youth drivers in fatal crashes, Nov 30), then clearly a different level of responsibility is being placed on youthful drivers compared to older drivers.

What is being implied by the Youth Court for serious driving offences is that once a youth gets a driving licence, the youth doesn’t have to accept adult responsibilities for his/her driving.

After all, one main adult responsibility for driving is to be tried in a District Court for a serious traffic offence.

If there are to be different prosecution types between adults and youth when it comes to driving offences, then surely there must be a youth driving licence that limits the performance of the car the youth can drive, their activity behind the wheel, and driving curfews being imposed upon all youth drivers.

The simple fact is, if a youth isn’t old enough to accept adult driver responsibility, s/he isn’t old enough to drive. Allan Kirk, Masterton
