Floods result in change

A new disaster prevention authority and rescue training for residents in flood-prone areas will form part of the New South Wales state government’s response to this year’s devastating floods. Premier Dominic Perrottet has accepted every recommendation in a report on recovery and reconstruction efforts after the February and March floods in the Northern Rivers and Hawkesbury-Nepean regions, which killed 13 people. The state government will establish a reconstruction authority by the end of the year. Residents in flood-prone areas will receive training in conducting rescues using their own private boats, which many did during the February floods. A permanent cabinet committee of senior ministers and public servants will be created to respond to major natural disasters.
