Maverick left-wing leader arrested during power grab

President Pedro Castillo of Peru was arrested yesterday, hours after he tried to dissolve his country’s elected Parliament to rule by decree. The maverick left-wing leader, who has been resisting impeachment attempts from congress on corruption charges since he took office last year, announced his power grab in a televised address. The assembly then went ahead with its planned impeachment vote, formally removing Castillo from power with 101 votes against him, six in support and ten abstentions. The armed forces issued a statement warning the president against violating the constitution.
