Ambition chosen over proven skills

In elevating Chris Luxon from backbench MP to party leader, National has picked fresh ambition over Simon Bridges’ proven skills and weathered frontline experience. The party will be dearly hoping this decision does not backfire, a la Todd Muller.

Given the numbers (and Judith Collins running interference), what other choice did the far-seeing Bridges have but to back Luxon and push for a unified stance?

No doubt Luxon’s name and brand recognition will result in a brisk upsurge in support for his party because it seems to me political momentum in this country is largely dictated by personality, less so by actual policy. This occurred immediately after Muller took over.

Speaking personally, as a voter, I wonder whether National still has its priorities all wrong, looking to spiff up the nest with some new sparkle and shine rather than ponder just what is in the country’s best interests.

Good luck Chris Luxon. You have your work cut out.
