Alfeld to captain Phoenix

PHILLIP ROLLO

Goalkeeper Lily Alfeld will lead Wellington Phoenix during their debut A-League Women season after being named captain following a team vote.

Adopting a model used by other elite sports teams including the Silver Ferns netball team, Phoenix players were asked a number of questions about the team’s leadership in an anonymous survey.

One of the questions asked the players who they would pick as captain, and

Alfeld, who is the oldest member of the squad at 26, was the player who got the most votes.

‘‘We tailor-made it to the Wellington Phoenix and the team we wanted to select,’’ coach Gemma Lewis said.

Alfeld was the first signing made by the Phoenix ahead of their first season in the A-League Women and Lewis said she had emerged as an obvious candidate to captain the team from the very start.

The Phoenix open the season with a game against Western Sydney Wanderers in Wollongong on Friday.
