Under the red traffic light setting, events are limited to no more than 100 people and seated service. Please note – you will be required to show your vaccine pass before entering a venue.

Tiny Beer Fest

After the news of the cancellation of the Great Kiwi Beer Festival this weekend, some disappointed hop heads got together and came up with an alternative way to celebrate safely with a variety of mini festivals to be held under the red traffic light setting this weekend:

Beers Fest: The Beers restaurant at 477B Blenheim Rd combines barbecue and beers in an abandoned warehouse. Book online to secure your table at Beersbeers.co.nz

The Greatest Hits: The ticketed Two Thumb Sunday Sesh from 2pm-7pm tomorrow includes their festival beers on tap. The Cruisy Brews Sunday will still go ahead at 3pm, but only for those with a ticket.

The Tiny Kiwi Pub Fest: Pomeroy’s is holding a mini beer festival from 12-5pm tomorrow offering brews from Beer Baroness, Derelict, Urbanaut, Duncans, Garage Project, Brew Moon, Pomeroys, McLeods, Deep Creek. Music, food specials and more. Full seated service with three clearly defined spaces. This event is not ticketed. No pints, festival glasses only, last call at 5pm. Extra toilets for each space. Today, Pomeroy’s is also holding a pickle party – from sour pickle slushies to picklethemed food specials available from 4pm.

Boom Town Beer Garden: The Boom Town Beer Garden is on the lawn behind The Alcove private event venue. Today, tomorrow and Sunday from 12pm.

Canterbury Brewers Collective: Tomorrow and Sunday it will offer 16 Great Kiwi Beer Festival beers from nine Canterbury breweries. To book seating by text only contact 0210770719 with your group numbers and time of arrival. You must wear a mask while walking around Riverside Market and have your vaccine passport ready to scan upon arrival.

Kumi E¯ Manatu

Kumi E¯ Manatu (Finding Black Tapa Memories), an exhibition by Tongan/ O¯ tautahi artist Kulimoe’anga Stone Maka opens at Jonathan Smart Gallery this week.

In 2020, Maka was selected to present two large-scale tapa cloths at the 22nd Biennale of Sydney. His work is also held in collections at the Christchurch and Auckland art galleries. Because of the red traffic light setting there will be no opening event. The exhibition will instead be available to view from 11am today and will run until February 19.

Ten per cent of sales from this exhibition will be donated to the Red Cross Tongan Appeal Fund.

Soft Carnage

As part of a return season, 2021 Billy T Award winner Brynley Stent (Taskmaster NZ, Celebrity Treasure Island) has the final nights of her sold-out, critically-acclaimed show Soft Carnage back at Little Andromeda from 7pm. Limited tickets are still available to tomorrow’s show.

Andris Apse, Light and Landscape

It has to be said that Diamond Harbour’s new supermarket is a thing of beauty. If you’re in the area and looking for some opportunities to see beautiful things and do art-galleryhands (clasped together behind your back), an exhibition by internationally renowned and award-winning photographer Andris Apse is at Stoddart Cottage, 2 Waipapa Ave, Diamond Harbour, from February 4-27. Titled Light & Landscape, it offers subjects from Apse’s lens over the past 30 years.

The Awkward Indian Guy

Advait Kirtikar presents the show, the Awkward Indian Guy at Good Times Comedy Club tonight from 8pm.

YCD Fresh Pool Party

Summer pool parties are on each weekend at council pools throughout the city until February 26.

The deep water splash pools at Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool will be put to good use as part of the manu competition today.

It is also the venue for the Youth and Cultural Development (YCD) FRESH Pool Party for youth today from 6-9.30pm. Hosted by Ronnie and with music from Clubkingz DJs, it has free entry, free drinks, free pizza, free fades and braids.

Contact YCD on Facebook and message them with your full name and age.

Numbers are limited because of the red light setting requirements. Vaccine pass required. People under 12 will need to be supervised.

Diablos Caravan

After a tough year for musicians, venues and events, Doc Sanchez, Jimi Kara and Luke Flanders, aka Diablos Caravan, will perform an evening of virtuosic acoustic guitar at the tiny and discreet Austin Club on February 6 as part of a 62-date nationwide summer tour. Expect original flamenco, blues, Latin jazz and everything in between.
