Quebec taps emergency reserves of maple syrup

A meagre maple syrup harvest has forced a Canadian province to dip into its strategic reserves. About 22 million kilograms of the breakfast staple – half the total stockpile held in a cavernous warehouse in northern Quebec – is being released in the biggest ooze since 2008. ‘‘This is the purpose of the reserve,’’ Helene Normandin, a spokeswoman for the Quebec Maple Syrup Producers federation, told The Times. ‘‘To make sure we never miss maple syrup.’’
