Carbon trading
As my ex-farm management/ agribusiness lecturer at Lincoln University, Keith Woodford, pointed out recently in NZ Farmers Weekly (November 22), ‘‘A carbon price of just $100/t carbon could totally blow away all sheep and beef farming’’ in New Zealand, while adding only 24c per litre to the price of fossil fuels’’.
As offsetting carbon emissions by converting sheep and beef farms to trees to claim carbon credits and tree crop rewards beats having to spend millions of dollars of capital to convert from coal or oil, bio fuels maybe difficult to store and handle and could have long-term cost increases.
The Government has invented a hungry green lion and set it loose, and every time it is fed it just gets bigger. Agriculture, lamb hasn’t a chance, but will surely be ripped to shreds, torn apart and consumed.
I hope people like eating pine trees. Dave Stanton Geraldine
