Return to war looms as militias hijack UN election

Presidential elections designed to bring peace to Libya are at risk of sinking into chaos after the disqualification of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi and warnings of a return to violence. Gaddafi’s advisers said they were prevented from lodging an appeal yesterday when armed men loyal to a rival candidate closed down the court house where it was being submitted. Gaddafi, the son of the former dictator, had been one of 25 disqualified in a decision released on Wednesday night, local time, by the election commission. Jan Kubis, the United Nations envoy who was supposed to oversee the election, had already resigned, saying he feared there could be a return to war. ‘‘The political climate remains heavily polarised,’’ he told the UN security council.
