I applaud Robert White (Letters, Jan 27) as he wonders how we can all share a bit of what we have with those who are struggling. Can I suggest that one easy way for people who wish they could help is to contact Variety and sponsor a child as he grows.

This wonderful organisation vets and makes payments on behalf of children who are living in circumstances that put them at risk of missing out. It especially supports them at school but will also help out with clothing, bedding and so on as required.

Payments are all made directly to the school or suppliers and for $45 a month you can make a real difference to the life of one person living in tough circumstances. You can even choose where in NZ your money goes so you can keep it local if you wish.
